If your car keys get damaged, it's a real problem. It always happens at the worst possible timing! Repairing a damaged key without the need to purchase a new one.
Dead Key Fob Batteries
Modern key fobs allow us to unlock doors, trunks and tailgates without the need for a car key. Some key fobs even come with an inbuilt key that can be used to start our vehicles. These fobs are powered by a tiny battery. If the battery is dead then the key fob will not be able to emit a signal that could be used to start the vehicle. Luckily, there are TheKeyLab to fix a dead key fob and get your car running again.
First, try to determine if the key fob is in fact dead. If it appears to be, you'll need to replace the battery. You can do this yourself by removing the fob from its clip or using a flat-head screwdriver. Be cautious not to put too much pressure on the fob or you may damage the fob. It is also important to ensure that you're using the correct type of battery. Most key fobs are the CR2032 3-Volt battery, however certain models may require a different type. Find out the kind of battery your vehicle requires by consulting the owner's manual, or you can visit an Interstate All Battery Center and have a battery specialist help you.
If the key fob actually isn't dead, you can revive it by moving it closer to your vehicle. Since the majority of key fobs use RFID (radio-frequency identification) they only work at a short distance and must be near enough to allow the ignition system to recognize the signal. You can unlock your vehicle or even start it by moving a couple of inches closer.
Many automobile manufacturers have a backup system that can be activated when the battery of the key fob is low. Ford, for example has a slot which is devoted to the key fob. If properly inserted the key fob will activate the engine of the car. You can find instructions in the owner's manual on how to locate this slot and insert the key fob in the correct way. If you're unable to start the car using this method, contact roadside assistance.
Broken Key Ring
The key fob's internal chip is what communicates with your vehicle's immobilizer system to begin the engine. If this chip becomes damaged or there are programming errors, the key fob will not be able send the correct identification code, and your car won't start. In certain instances, a faulty transponder key could also be caused by physical damage or wear and tear on the key shell or contact pads.
Often the moment a key fob starts to fail to communicate with the immobilizer system of your vehicle there will be specific warning signs on the dashboard. These may include warnings about errors, flashing lights or the key is not locking the vehicle. If you notice any of these warnings, contact your local locksmith right away to repair your key fob or replacement.
It's very easy to damage your key ring by putting too much pressure on it, particularly when carrying many keys. This can cause the key fob to snap in half, which is one of the most common causes of broken car keys. If this happens, you can attempt to use super glue to fix it by applying a small amount the glue to both sides of the split and then gently pressing them together. It is essential to apply a gel-type adhesive that dries slowly to prevent drips or runniness.
If this method does not work, you need to call a professional locksmith as soon as possible in order to prevent any further damage to your vehicle. A locksmith who is certified will be able to replace or repair your key fob quickly and will be able to ensure that the ignition lock as well as the door lock are not affected by the process.

It can be very frustrating when your key fob gets damaged. It's not cause for anxiety or anger. Instead, you can take proactive measures to minimize the chance of your key fob breaking in the future. This includes regular maintenance including key protectors, and having an extra key. If you do encounter problems with your key fob the team at Quicksmith is available to assist!
Broken Key Loop
One of my MK5 keysfobs snapped off the small key ring that is at the top, where it joins the keyfob. Apparently it's made out of very soft plastic or metal. I've drilled a hole, and then wet-sanded it to make it stronger, but I suspect that the issue isn't solved by that.
I've also tried wrapping the broken part of the ring in clear tape, but it does not seem to do any good. It's a shame, since I use the tiny rings to hold my keys on the mini-split ring that holds the bigger split rings for the other keyfobs.
If the key fob's case is damaged, you can usually open it and replace the battery if it isn't dead. There are online kits for this, but they usually only offer a temporary fix - it might be better to take it to a technician who can swap out the battery and reprogram the key fob. You can also locate the new case at the locksmith or home improvement stores. These cases aren't as costly as a brand new key fob.
